Learn more about Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital

Who We Are

Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital (NTRH) is the largest public hospital in Laikipia County, originally established in the 1930s as Nanyuki District Hospital. It was renamed in 2012 via Gazette Notice No. 9811, reflecting its expanded role as a teaching and referral facility. Fully owned by the County Government of Laikipia, NTRH is strategically located in Nanyuki Ward, Laikipia East Sub-County, and serves a wide catchment area that includes parts of Laikipia, Meru, and Nyeri counties. The hospital provides healthcare to a population of over 267,000 people, with a significant majority residing in Laikipia County.

Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital

NTRH is a Level 4 facility with a high patient load, attending to about 600 walk-in patients daily and over 50,000 patients quarterly. It has become a model for emergency care in the region due to its ability to manage a heavy workload with limited physical resources. The hospital offers extensive inpatient and outpatient services, including specialized and scheduled clinics such as ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, mental health, TB, and cancer care. Additionally, its emergency department is operational 24/7, and it has robust support services in pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology, alongside other weekday services like dental care, dialysis, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.

The hospital currently has 199 beds, including a 20-bed Critical Care Unit. A newly completed Mother and Child (M&C) Block adds 100 more beds, increasing the hospital's total capacity to 300—a key benchmark for its anticipated upgrade to Level 5 status. The M&C Block includes dedicated maternity and amenity wards, as well as a theatre with two operating tables, enabling up to five simultaneous surgeries. With additional services such as a private insurance amenity clinic, diabetes and palliative care clinics, and a Blood Transfusion Satellite Centre, NTRH is evolving into a more comprehensive and sustainable regional healthcare facility.
